The Uzbekistan Blues
Hardly anyone knows that Uzbek men shave their balls and butts. These kinds of things you can’t read about in the mainstream media. You can’t even read about Uzbekistan in the mainstream media that often, anyway. So, one of my friends, who I'll call John, suggested that I should write this stuff down. After all, it’s a side of Uzbekistan that few outsiders have seen – and they likely won’t get to see any time soon as the country seems to close itself off from the rest of the world. It's also a side few insiders have seen either, unless they’ve been in the pants of an Uzbek. ¶ 8:45 AM

What is the social anthropological significance of this shaving ritual that you have observed first-hand in Central Asia? Can we say that this is isolated within certain particular communities or does it have roots in other cultures? These Uzbeks may be on to something...
